Sarah Courtney, an apprentice bench joiner with Patton joinery, picked up the National Association of Shopfitters annual 2nd year Apprentice Prize in London. Sarah is not only the first female to ever take the top prize which consists of a trophy, certificate and a cheque, she is also the first apprentice from NI to receive the award.

ConstructionSkills in NI have launched a unique contextualised resource to address Essential Skills in the construction industry. ‘Essential Skills Communication for Construction’ has been developed to address the literacy Essential Skills components of apprenticeship training. It is intended that this vocationally contextualised resource will support Essential Skills Literacy tutors in their efforts to make programmes for construction students vocationally relevant – so also assisting with apprentice achievement and retention rates

Prior to this I was the Director in Scotland for the Chartered Institute of Building and was responsible for their UK wide policy and external relations team. My background is in Civil Engineering and I am a Chartered Civil Engineer. I am looking forward to embracing this new role as Chief Executive and facing the challenges that lie ahead.

£1,000 construction grant to encourage apprentice retention

CITB-ConstructionSkills Northern Ireland today announced a new one off grant of £1,000 for employers with an apprentice who has reached their 3rd consecutive year in employment in the last 12 months.  This grant is only available to those registered and in-scope to CITB-ConstructionSkills Northern Ireland.

Last year 35 experienced workers achieved NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry, Bricklaying and Joinery through a DEL funded pilot initiative run by South Eastern Regional College (SERC). Due to this success this programme will be running again and there will be the opportunity for 30 time served carpenters & Joiners and 30 bricklayers to gain a Level 3 NVQ Diploma through on-site assessment and workshops.

The Cabinet Office made its long awaited announcement on the outcome of their review of non departmental public bodies (Quango’s ) on October 2010. This review included the Construction Industry Training Board, the GB sister organisation of CITB-ConstructionSkills Northern Ireland. As a result of the announcement the future of the Construction Industry Training Board GB is, as yet, not determined and it is described in the announcement as still “under consideration”. A final decision is expected to be announced in November this year.

11 local construction apprentices are celebrating success following their participation in SummitSkills SkillFridge UK and the Skillbuild UK National finals that were held in Birmingham and North Wales during July and September. The students achieved 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze medals in brickwork, cabinet making, carpentry, plastering, joinery, wall & floor tiling and refrigeration.

There is a notable lack of opportunity for traditionally skilled crafts people and a lack of coordinated formal training provision in this area.

ConstructionSkills has today released its latest Construction Skills Network forecasts for the 2011-15 period. The Sector Skills Council (SSC) warned that the industry in Northern Ireland still faces a tough year in 2011 with employment levels likely to drop to just over 60,000 in 2011 before the sector returns to growth.

Skillbuild NI Ltd. and South Eastern Regional College (SERC) today launched the search for Northern Ireland’s most talented construction apprentice. The Skillbuild NI National Competition, which will be held on 13 and 14 April 2011 at SERC’s Skills Centre in Newtownards, is a skills competition designed to challenge the best young talent in the construction industry. It has been developed to promote excellence among young craftspeople throughout Northern Ireland.

CITB-ConstructionSkills NI has acknowledged the academic success of the top four local students who achieved the highest grades in GCSE construction in NI for 2010.

This subject has been developed by CCEA to give students a realistic understanding and experience of Construction that will enable them to develop an authentic working relationship with the real world-of-work. In light of the interest into the built environment GCSE construction has grown in popularity over the past six years growing from 100 candidates in 2005 to total of 780 candidates in 2010.

£1.2m TRAINING GRANTS SCHEME TO HELP LOCAL CONSTRUCTION EMPLOYERS

CITB-ConstructionSkills NI has today launched their updated 2011/2012 £1.2m Grant Scheme to help facilitate training for the local construction industry.

The grant application process has been simplified and offers employers further flexibility to claim whilst they train. For those employers that claim on line they can benefit by up to an additional 5% grant and by opting to receive electronic payment plus they will receive their grant within 10 working days which will help employer’s cash flow in these difficult economic times.

Local Painters & Decorators make Traditional Heritage Picture Perfect

Two stunning National Trust properties provided the inspiring setting for an innovative two day course on 23rd and 24th November for eighteen painters and decorators from across Northern Ireland. This bespoke training course on the repair and maintenance of painted decoration and wall coverings on traditional (pre-1919) buildings was hosted by CITB-ConstructionSkills NI in partnership with the Painting & Decorating Association (PDA) and the National Trust.

Calling all those involved in the traditional building sector, you could be eligible for The Marsh Award for Traditional Building Skills 2011. Nominations are currently being sought for 2 awards with prize money of £1,000 for each category. These awards are in their sixth year and are open to crafts people and trainers working in any of the four UK home countries. Slight growth for NI Construction Industry over next 5 years

ConstructionSkills has released its latest Construction Skills Network (CSN) forecasts for the 2012-2016 period. The Sector Skills Council (SSC) highlights that whilst the Northern Ireland construction industry has continued to underperform compared to the rest of the UK, there is a slight growth in output and employment predicted throughout the forecast period.

SkillbuildNI Finals confirmed for NWRC Greystone

In just a few weeks North West Regional College’s local state-of-the-art training centre at Greystone Road will play host to one of the Northern Ireland’s most prestigious skills competitions. The Limavady Campus has been selected as the venue for the SkillbuildNI 2012 National Finals which will see over one hundred apprentices and trainees from across the province compete to be the best in a range of 12 different construction craft areas, including Brickwork, Floor and Wall Tiling, Carpentry and Joinery and Electrical Installation.

After achieving gold, silver and bronze medals at WorldSkills 2011, the search for the top construction apprentices started again with 100 competitors from all over the Province testing their skills at Skillbuild 2012 at North West Regional College, Greystone campus, Limavady on 28 & 29 March.

Construction body boosts funds for industry training

CITB-ConstructionSkills NI are now working in direct partnership with federations and industry bodies to help fund demand led training within the local construction industry. This scheme, formally titled ‘Tier 2’ is integrated as part of the already existing training grants scheme and is essentially more proactive and flexible in working in partnership with the industry.

A recent survey carried out independently on behalf of CITB-ConstructionSkills NI has identified that 60% of employers surveyed provided training in the last twelve months. In a poll of 100 local construction employers slightly fewer than the previous year had trained staff to a nationally recognised qualification but more had taken on apprentices. Whilst the main barrier to training is primarily cost, it is encouraging that despite the harsh economic conditions employers are continuing to invest in training and skills.

Back to the Future - College Lecturers Get the Knowledge on Traditional Building Skills

Construction lecturers from our local colleges are breaking new ground by being part of the first ever traditional building skills ‘Training the Trainers’ programme held in Northern Ireland. This innovative programme is allowing them to develop and improve their knowledge and understanding of the traditional building skills and materials essential for the correct repair and maintenance of pre-1919 buildings, of which there are 125,000 in Northern Ireland.

Construction apprentices announced for WorldSkills Squad for Germany 2013

Seven of Northern Ireland’s top construction trainees have been selected to join the UK Squad for the next WorldSkills competition in Leipzig, Germany in 2013.
WorldSkills is the biggest international skills competition in the world. Held every two years in one of its 61 member countries/regions, the competition sees around 1000 young people aged 18 - 23 from across the globe come together to compete for medals in more than 40 different trades and skills including Electrical Installation, Mobile Robotics, Web Design, Cooking and Landscape Gardening.

Construction Industry working hard to beat the economic storm

There is no doubt that the construction industry has been hit very hard by the current economic downturn. The Construction Skills Network (CSN) predicts a slight growth in output over the UK in the next 5 years but as activity had declined significantly in Northern Ireland it will take longer to reach a full recovery.

The Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) invites applications from individuals who wish to nominate themselves to serve as a Board Member of CITB-ConstructionSkills NI. CITB-ConstructionSkills NI aims to encourage the training of those employed, or intending to be employed, in the construction industry in Northern Ireland. Through this appointment process, the Department intends to appoint five Board Members for a period of three years.

Top GCSE Construction Students recognised at building awards

CITB-ConstructionSkills NI has acknowledged the academic success of the top three local students who achieved the highest grades in GCSE construction & Built Environment in NI for 2012.

This subject has been developed by CCEA to give students a realistic understanding and experience of Construction that will enable them to develop an authentic working relationship with the real world-of-work.

First place with the highest grade was John Forsythe from Ballymena Academy, second place was awarded to Chloe Hutchinson, St Columbanus College, Bangor and third place to Niall Cox, Abbey CBS, Newry.
